Aroma, Well Being & India
The aroma of lilac blowing through my window while reading Nancy Drew mysteries as a kid, the smell of sage on a roasting turkey at Thanksgiving, and always, always the comforting waft of freshly-ground coffee. The capacity of aroma to calm and heal us comes in a wide continuum of forms.
Our understanding of how specific scents impact us physiologically stems from an ancient Indian practice called Ayurveda. What we recognize in the west as ‘aromatherapy’ may also be loosely applied to some Ayurvedic practices because therapies contain aromatic plants, thereby using their essential oils. Also, how these oils are used in those practices parallels the purposes of aromatherapy.
Ayur-life force or vital energy+ Veda-science, is thought to be over 5000 years old, strongly influencing Chinese medicine practices. The concept is that everything, evvvveryyything impacts everything else in all of creation. What kind of constitution (of a possible three) that you might be, what you eat, when you eat it, how you exercise, etc. affects you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. And, according to Ayurveda doctrine, the season of the year even impacts balance. So when some illness or body function goes awry, the whole body is treated, instead of just the isolated ailment. It’s a pretty thoughtful system and hasn’t changed much in five millennia.
While not as sophisticated in approach, the design and creation of aromas for jane’s short & sweet sugar scrubs do take into account how the senses are impacted by what aroma, how the constitution can be improved, how the act of exfoliating and moisturizing needs to have a pleasing aroma combination for a full experience.
And all you thought you were doing was just getting softer!!!
I’ll be returning to India this summer, to learn more about the practice and to understand more thoroughly how to continue to create a great product for greater balance. Next week, a phenomenal way to keep cool in the summer.
